Biography

Madi was born on July 12, 1995, an absolutely beautiful baby girl at
9+ pounds.  A bright baby, she met all milestones early and kept us laughing
with her playful antics and infectious smile from the very beginning.  Madi had
her share of ear infections and pneumonias, and severe allergic reactions to
medications, and was diagnosed with severe asthma at 10 months.  Madi was never
far from her nebulizer, but lived a very normal toddler existance.  At 3, she
started preschool with a huge smile on her back and a portable nebulizer on her
back.  It was just "part of her" and hospital ER visits were just a part of her
life as well.  Wearing her frilly pink tutu to the ER, singing and dancing while
she waited to be treated was pretty much how she handled her respiratory
distress as well as her whole life.
At 5, Madi started Kindergarten, still having sometimes 2-3 asthma attacks a
night.  She loved school and would not miss even when she had been up all night
with breathing treatments.  About midway through that year, she started showing
occasional moodiness, something very new for this very happy girl.  She was
emotional at times, crying when there was no explanation, and complaining of
stomach aches after eating.  Her teachers mentioned that she seemed almost spacy
before lunch, and she started wetting the bed at night.  When she came home from
dance class, glassy eyed and almost non responsive after having jelly beans as a
treat, we checked her blood sugar at home and quickly realized the problem.  In
the hospital it was confirmed, like her father and maternal grandmother, Madi
was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.  She was initially scared of the shots and
constant blood sugar checks in the hospital, but soon embraced her own care and
her own mission.  From age 5, Madi decid
ed to do all that she could to help people with diabetes and to raise money to
help find a cure.  She started her own walk team for the American Diabetes
Association, became a regional spokesperson and advocacy ambassador and put in
countless volunteer hours every year to help improve the lives of all people
living with diabetes.  One very good thing did come out of her diagnosis though.
The doctors were challenged to find different medications to treat her asthma,
as the ones she was on at the time were increasing her blood sugar.  For the
first time ever, her asthma became very well controlled, and it has remained so!
At age 13, Madi began having extreme stomach pains, worse than the horrendous
migraines that she was diagnosed with at age 11.  It soon got to where her pain
level would be excruciating each time she ate, regardless of what she ate.
Then, it became constant and she was almost unable to eat at all.  Ending up in
the hospital for two weeks to diagnose and treat an eosinophilic
gastrointestinal blood disorder, Madi left with a naso-jejunal feeding
tube/pump, a host of medications, and cases of amino acid based elemental
formula which became her only source of nutrition for a while.  For four months,
she had the formula only and nothing by mouth.  Then, Madi began the only
treatment
