Biography

Kayne was born premature at 28 weeks along with his twin brother, Ashton. They are identical, to most. (I still don't think so.)

One afternoon, Kayne started projectile vomiting. Me, being the paranoid person I am, quickly took him to the doctor. He was sent for an Ultrasound to rule out pyloric stenosis. That is when it all began....(around Thanksgiving 2008)

Kayne was immediately sent to Pitt Memorial Hospital and was diagnosed with Hepatoblastoma. We were given two choices: Take him home to spend the little time he had left or go to NC Children's Hospital for possible treatment. Of course, we were on our way to UNC within hours. I will NEVER forget those words. I will never forget how my heart was broken for my little boy, who had just endured so much in the NICU. I never pondered the possibility of losing him...he was and still is one of the most amazing little boys I have ever met.

Our visit to UNC brings mixed feelings. We met with the same surgeon who had performed their hernia repair. He diagnosed him with Hepatoblastoma and for some reason decided to take the scans on DVD to the Radiology Dept to re-examine them. Within the hour, his diagnosis had been changed from a terminal illness to something totally different. I believe with all of my heart that the Lord changed those scans. It has still been a difficult journey for my son, but he is still here with us.

The diagnosis - Infantile HemangioEndothelioma. His liver was covered with these "hemangiomas" and was lucky to have been asymptomatic. Usually, the child would be in Congestive Heart Failure with the lesions covering the whole liver. Not Kayne. He is such a miracle. Both of my boys are.

Kayne had to undergo a liver biopsy to prove that it was not cancer. There were major complications from bleeding...we almost lost him. We spent Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year's at NC Children's Hospital. His surgeon, whom I followed to Cincinnati Children's, checked on him everyday. Even on his days off. He did receive excellent care there. He still goes there for frequent checkups. We are so blessed to still have him with us and the diagnosis was another blessing we had been praying for.

Kayne had another liver biopsy at Cincinnati Children's Hospital in January 2011 and it was non cancerous. These liver lesions have a chance of turning malignant, which is of great concern. As of now, we are awaiting a liver re-section to remove the concerning areas on his liver. Generally, the hemangiomas go away on their own. For some reason, some are still growing. There is also a new suspicious area on the outer portions of his liver. Praying it will show no malignancy and that Kayne will bounce right back from this invasive surgery.

As of October 12 2012, Kayne began his fight with Metastatic Angiosarcoma of his liver and lungs. The cancer is so aggressive that we fear chemotherapy will not work in time to keep his liver from obstructing his lungs. He is fighting so hard and continues to amaze us by his strength. The odds are against us, but we will not give up!

As of February 2013, Kayne has amazed all his doctors by the mere fact he still with us and by how quickly the tumors responded to chemotherapy. It is a miracle of God! To go from COMFORT CARE WITH NO CHANCE OF SURVIVAL to his normal sweet self in a few months is the greatest miracle that I have ever witnessed.

The cancer is almost gone from his lungs and liver tumors have decreased drastically in size. He will continue chemotherapy until the cancer is gone or if a liver transplant is determined to be the best option. The power of prayer is amazing. "It only takes one prayer to change everything". He has been called our "Christmas Miracle".

I want to thank everyone for the continued love and support. Most importantly, I want to thank God for blessing me with my wonderful boys and for always watching over us. WE WILL NEVER EVER GIVE UP! Please continue to pray for my little hero and share this page. We believe in miracles and you will too!
