Biography

Addalynne Sophia  was born on March 27, 2009. She was absolutely perfect. Ten tiny fingers and ten tiny toes, we were blessed with a beautiful brown eyed girl. She was right on track with all the other children her age. She excelled in everything and was always looking for new challenges. October 17, 2012, only a month and half after starting Pre-K, we found a lump on the left side of Addy's stomach. 3 Days of scans, blood tests and waiting...and our worst nightmare had been confirmed. Kidney Cancer.

Addalynne's diagnoses is Bilateral Wilm's Tumor. She had 1 large (the size of a softball) tumor on her left kidney and 3 small (the size of golfballs) on her right kidney. Addalynne endured 12 weeks of chemotherapy so that the tumors were small enough to remove without hindering her kidney function. On January 16, 2013 Addalynne had surgery that removed the four tumors leaving her with 80% of her kidneys. On February 6, 2013 Addy underwent surgery once again for a bowel obstruction. She was 100% blocked in 19 places. 6 days later we were back on track and Addalynne started the next phase of treatments. 8 radiation treatments and 6 long months of chemo therapy. Each chemo treatment was either a 4 or 6 day stay at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh. We would go every 16 days. Leaving her father and brother behind every two weeks or so, we would make the trip up. Our time at home was much needed and greatly appreciated between stays. We weren't allowed to go out much.

Addy's blood counts would drop severely and any fever over 101 would send us back to the 9th floor for a minimum of 2 days. The thought of getting sick was devastating. Addy never complained one time. She greeted each inpatient admission with a smile. I'm not sure, even today, how she managed to do it. Thinking back, I remember pulling into the parking garage at the hospital wanting to lay down on the concrete and kick and scream, But I held it together because she did. Our last chemo therapy treatment was July 25, 2013! Addy has had one set of "end of treatment" scans that showed NED(No Evidence of Disease). She has been having monthly check ups and port flushes since her treatments ended. On Nov 19, 2013 we will return to Children's for our next set of scans. If they come back NED Addy will have her chemo port removed and our visits will be only every 3 months for scans. Her scans will continue until she is 5 years NED. After the 5th year she is considered a survivor and will only go once a year for scans and checkups!! It's going to be a long stressful 5 years waiting for scan results, but we can do! Addy is one tough cookie!
